As Canadian music stories go, Pacifika is an almost quintessential testament to the country’s policies on diversity. In this case, talented musicians from different cultures discover each other on the West Coast and find common musical ground—each participant contributing her or his own language, influences and experiences. This is the stuff of confluence and chemistry, and every once in a while, in this world when it all comes together, a special new sound is created. That happened with Pacifika. The group features multi-talented Silvana Kane, a Peruvian-born vocalist & chief lyricist; Vancouver raised Adam Popowitz, accomplished producer and an explorer of guitar soundscapes & rhythms; and dub-wise bassist Toby Peter, born in Canada, raised in Barbados, and student of the greats of progressive jazz, dub and hip-hop. Kane and Popowitz met while attending High School in Burnaby, BC and formed the pop band Big Bottom Swing. Kane left the band to join the Canadian pop trio West End Girls (A&M) while Popowitz helped form the Vancouver hard-rock band Mollies Revenge (Atlantic Records). Meanwhile Peter formed the fusion band Salvador Dream (Warner) and then joined K-os for his Joyful Rebellion World Tour in 2004. In the same year, Kane and Popowitz re-connected and released Unveiled. After seeing a live performance in 2006, Peter approached Kane and Popowitz about joining the band and soon after the newly formed trio signed a deal with Six Degrees Records.
