Paula Koivuniemi is a Finnish adult contemporary singer whose career spans several decades, peaking in popularity during the 1980s. Born on June 19, 1947, in Seinäjoki, Finland, she began her recording career in the '60s and scored her first hit single in 1966 with "Perhonen." Koivuniemi's success was limited in subsequent years, however, and she didn't make her full-length album debut until 1975 with Leikki Riittää. The 1980s were a decade of peak success for Koivuniemi, beginning with Leikki Riittää in 1980. All in all, she released eight albums during the '80s, plus a few greatest-hits compilations. She remained active and fairly popular during the '90s, releasing an album every couple years and regularly hitting the charts. After the turn of the century, she was less active yet more popular, releasing a new album every few years and often hitting the Top Ten as with Yöperhonen (2006) and Nainen (2009). Given her illustrious career and longevity, Koivuniemi became something of an icon in Finland. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
