Often credited with the revival of Maltese sung pop music, Brikkuni have been doing the rounds since their seminal 2008 debut 'Kuntrabanda' - a genre bending pop/rock/punk hybrid that transformed the band into a local cult phenomenon ushering in a new wave of Maltese alternative music in it's wake. They have since released a further three albums with their latest being "Il-Ħajja, Il-Mewt, In-Nisa". 'Il-Ħajja, Il-Mewt, In-Nisa' (2020) shares Rub Al Khali's thematic concerns but the eleven songs presented here are delivered with a pop sensibility that is entirely at odds with it's predecessor's experimental nature. The band's renewed penchant for strong hooks, sweet(er) harmonies and tight songwriting does not however come at the expense of curiosity. Brikkuni's willingness to operate out of their comfort zone and play around with unfamiliar genre and textures still manages to make 'Il-Ħajja, il-Mewt, In-Nisa' a rather unpredictable affair. One you'd hopefuly want to involve yourself with time and again.
