Beatriz Diniz, known as singer-songwriter April Marmara, lives by the river Tejo in her hometown Lisbon, which is befitting of her music’s timeless testimony to the transience of life. Her folk songs carry a sense of stillness and, simultaneously, a quiet unsettledness. Such ambiguity is found in the kind of person that attentively observes the passing of time but by no means sits passively on its sidelines. In fact, her observational findings are what brought her to write her 2nd and most recent LP “Still Life”, which is to be released in 2023 on Lay Down Recordings. The new album is a deep dive into isolation, loneliness, the quality of human relationships and, most of all, of someone’s relationship to nature and their own place in this world. It’s a definite step up from April Marmara’s debut work “New Home” (2018), both spiritually and artistically. “Still Life” is a collection of 8 tracks filled with cinematic soundscapes and pictorial lyrics. While listening, one finds themselves under a calm transe, glued to the guitar’s hypnotic riffs, only to be occasionally brought back to reality by the comfort of a beautiful cello or clarinet melody. And, of course, the ever strange and unique quality of Beatriz Diniz’s voice.
