The distinctive guitar-led bedroom-funk-pop of Belfast-born producer/songwriter KONL mixes vintage with contemporary, combining natural and electronic sounds. In his own words, his music sounds “a bit like…well…imagine if C-3PO sang the blues”. We can only presume that what he really means to say is – the music is technologically savvy, but still retains a certain lo-fi, DIY charm. The fact he sings, writes, produces and plays most of the instruments recorded means there’s an initial similarity to all-rounders like Prince - but it’s the combination of toxically funky rhythms with sweet, humorous songwriting that means his music falls somewhere in the valley carved out by artists like John Mayer or Vulfpeck. As a producer, KONL is one to watch for this year – he has already lent his distinctive production style to artists such as Alice Kim and Phoebe Katis, as well as 8-piece funk band New Position .
