Packing her music with unashamed confidence, poignancy and intrigue, Sydney musician OKENYO is an artist in constant evolution. Respected and renowned for her meticulous crafting of music that pushes the boundaries, OKENYO’s artistry reflects the fluidity and changing perceptions of hip-hop and R&B. OKENYO’s 2018 debut EP THE WAVE and heralded single ‘Woman’s World’ captured the hearts and minds of fans and music industry alike offering up a powerful statement with effervescence and revitalised charm. Since then OKENYO has gone from strength to strength with adored 2019 singles ‘Buckle Up’ and ‘Eyes To The Sky’. Holding nothing back in 2020, OKENYO released her recent EP SOLO, highlighting a softer side of OKENYO’S work with sounds reminiscent of Laura Mvula, Syd and Kali Uchis. Most recently arriving with an incredibly personal release ‘Anthropology’ sees OKENYO claim her space as a black woman and challenging audiences to question their power and privilege. Anthropology arrives at an important time within the current context of the Black Lives Matter movement across the world and here for Bla(c)k people in Australia. Brashly unapologetic, OKENYO affirms her place as a talented multidisciplinary artist where commentary on some of the most pressing issues are met with undeniable musical crafting. We will see a further progression from OKENYO in the later part of 2020, with a brand new conceptual body of work. 2020 is the year of OKENYO.
