Finland’s oldest extant choir, the Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki, also known as “Akademen,” is a Swedish-language academic male-voice choir in Helsinki, Finland, and thus the only one of its kind. Akademen is affiliated with the University of Helsinki, as are the Academic Female Voice Choir Lyran, the YL Male Voice Choir, and the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra. The choir was founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius, known as “the father of Finnish music,” at what was then the Imperial Alexander University of Helsinki, today the University of Helsinki. The choir is amongst the most prominent male voice choirs in the Nordic countries and its c. 50 active members are mostly students and alumni from the universities in the capital region. Chief conductor and artistic director since 2019 is Ms Elisa Huovinen, Master of Music.
