Ilustrada began as a collaboration between songwriter/musician Andrew Landry and Producer/Instrumentalist Matthew Huber. The pair collaborated musically on a self-titled debut EP in 2017 when Andrew approached Matthew with a collection of demos that he had been working on in his home studio. After the initial project, subsequent live recordings and remixes were released using material from the EP. The integration of classic 60’s and 70’s style lyricism and song structures with bright, dynamic guitar compositions and clean, washy synth arrangements is what defined Ilustrada’s initial work. There was a strong emphasis on radio-ready folk arrangements and warm, dynamic instrumentation. After Matt put more emphasis on his career as a mix engineer, Andrew went back to the drawing board, pulling inspiration from the slick 90’s and early 00’s recordings that influenced him as a young teen. A batch of singles that emphasized a sense of bored cynicism and alienation that relied on more trip-hop and 90’s alternative sounds began to emerge.
