Society 1 is an American industrial rock band formed in the 1990s in Los Angeles by lead singer Matt Zane who LA Weekly described as an embodiment of "Morrisonesque shamanics and Satanic self-determination." They have released six studio albums, a live album, a compilation album, and a spoken word poetry album by vocalist Zane. The band has also performed at several major festivals, including Download, where Zane broke several records by performing the entire set suspended from four meat hooks through his back. Their show at the Download Festival landed them the #2 Spot on Cracked.com for "The 5 Most Irresponsibly Badass Live Rock Shows Of All Time" Throughout their 20 plus year career they've had multiple notable members such as Paul Raven (Killing Joke, Prong, Ministry) and Ivan DePrume (White Zombie) and toured internationally most recently with Static X in 2019. Their most recent album Black Level Six is the final collaboration between Zane and long time bassist DV Karloff that was completed prior to Karloff's passing in 2021. Later that year the band completed and released a documentary honoring DV titled "The Altered Noise" that was accepted into the American Horror Film Festival.
