If anyone can talk about crafting a career based not only on talent but also on sheer leaps of faith and risk, it’s songwriter, producer and recording artist Floyd “A1” Bentley. With over 30 songs on the 2017 Billboard Hot 100 that he wrote and produced, and 2018 looking just as promising, it is a no brainer that the heavy-hitter step into the forefront as an artist himself. Now with two platinum singles under his belt (Chris Brown’s “Grass Ain’t Greener” and “Party” featuring Usher and Gucci Mane) the hitmaker contributed 19 other songs on Chris Brown’s Heartbreak on a Full Moon album which went certified gold in just three days. Bentley was also a featured artist on the single “Sensei.” A1 has tallied a wide variety of impressive credits including writing and producing twelve songs off of Ty Dolla $ign’s album Beach House 3 as well as majority of tracks on Ty Dolla’s joint album with singer Jeremih called MihTy. A VH1 Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood veteran, A1 has successfully juggled being a fan favorite television personality along with his burgeoning music career. Of the last five years, A1 says it’s simply part and parcel of building a brand. “You’re going to take some losses,” explains the self-professed “rock star” who wears black fingernail polish and pearls. “But you have to take smart losses. I‘ve done records for free and taken a low percentage to get to the next level. I’ve worked hard and am still working hard— always trying to get somewhere I haven’t been.”
