Soft Idiot is the stage name of Philadelphia based songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist Justin Roth. Over the course of eight full length albums and numerous singles and EPs, Soft Idiot has evolved from a lo-fi/bedroom pop act into a fully realized recording project and live outfit. Described as, “one of the most prolific acts in the Philly scene,” Roth has built his following by self-producing and releasing heartfelt records on a yearly basis since learning to record and mix in his bedroom in 2015. His songwriting and production build on the bones of indie rock and folk music, adding layers of screaming guitars and bubbling synthesizer melodies. By combining well-honed singer-songwriter basics with surprising, and even sometimes abrasive elements, Roth's music keeps the listener guessing in a way that always feels cohesive. The lyrics ambiguity to paint impressionistic images of the natural world. One song may invoke a night alive with the sound of hooting owls and skittish deer, while another flickers through days sparkling with bird songs and creaking weathervanes. Put plainly, the Soft Idiot sound is crafted with undeniable care and professionalism, while still remaining grounded in a sense of vulnerability and optimism. Pics by Vito Scutti
