A Glasgow Gael, Mary Ann belongs to a tradition-bearer family from Skye. She trained as a classical musician in Glasgow and Manchester, and a brief diversion running the BBC’s Gaelic news service led to a parallel career as broadcaster. She lives in Lochaber with fellow musician-producer Nick Turner. A founder member of ‘supergroup’ Cliar, All-time Best Album winners at the Scots Trad Music Awards, she's also twice winner of the Lorient International Harp Competition, double Mòd gold medallist, and a Saltire Award winner. She co-edited Fonn (Melody/Land), awarded Arts & Culture prize at the first National Gaelic Awards. Her residency at Gaelic college, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, led to Aiseag (Ferryboat) for the first PRSF New Music Biennial, and other commissions include soundtrack for BBC documentary ‘Càirdean Cogaidh’ (War Comrades) and ‘Aon Teanga’ (One Tongue) - a PRSF Beyond Borders commission. Other works include ‘Black Snow’ for the international Antarctic Earth Sciences Symposium, song-writing with poet, Aonghas MacNeacail, a residency with Nick Turner for Aberdeen Music Hall, and Beul na h-Oidhche gu Camhanaich (Mouth of the Night), for the 2016 Blas Festival. Her discography is extensive, finally stepping forward as a solo artist with two albums. Her debut solo on ARC Music is ‘An Dàn’ (The Song/Destined) – original music with lyrics by herself and some of Gaeldom’s greatest poets. Her follow-up will be ‘Glaschu’, a love-song to her Glasgow Gàidhealtachd upbringing.
