高知県土佐清水市出身。 唯一無二の歌声と、SOUL・R&B・JAZZ・ゴスペル・ROCKなど幅広い音楽的バックグラウンドをポップスへと昇華させる、オリジナリティ溢れるサウンドが魅力のシンガーソングライター。高校卒業後、18歳の時に突如音楽に目覚め、20歳で上京。22歳で単身LA に渡り、独学でピアノを始める。2009年『ストーリー』でメジャーデビュー。 自身の楽曲だけでなく小泉今日子、坂本真綾、SMAP、Sexy Zone、Da-iCE、DISH//、土岐麻子、新妻聖子、薬師丸ひろ子、和田アキ子、等多くのアーティストに楽曲提供をおこなっている。 2018年から世界中を旅しながらJohn Scofield(Gt), Ray Parker Jr.(Gt), Bluey from Incognito(Gt), Stuart Zender(Bs ex.Jamiroquai), Terrace Martin(Sax), Nicholas Payton(TP), Renato Neto(Key)など世界的なプレイヤーとのレコーディングを実現。2021年に8th アルバム『愛の出番 ＋ thanks to』をリリース。2022年6月に「Whale Song」（酔鯨酒造50周年記念ムービーテーマソング）をはじめ故郷・高知にまつわる楽曲を集めた『Whale Song EP』をリリースしiTunes R&Bチャートにて1位を獲得（連続1位獲得記録更新中）。8月には故郷・土佐清水市で「酔鯨酒造 presents さかいゆう sings Whale Song」を開催。11月にさかいゆう & origami PRODUCTIONSカバーアルバム『CITY POP LOVERS』を2023年3月15日にシュガーベイブの名曲「DOWN TOWN」のカバー（さかいゆう feat. Ovall, Michael Kaneko, Hiro-a-key, さらさ）をリリース。 
 Yu Sakai is a Japanese singer songwriter. He is the most popular R&B artist in Japan. He started becoming interested in music at the age of 18 years old. He went to the U.S and learned the piano by his own when he was 22 years old. His music is affected by various music such as Soul Music, R&B, Gospel, Jazz etc. His sound has rich in originality and his beautiful voice continues to fascinate the audience. He is not only composing a song for himself but also producing and providing his song to Japanese artists. He released cover Sugar Babe ‘s “DOWN TOWN” (Yu Sakai feat. Ovall, Michael Kaneko, Hiro-a-key, Salasa) was released on 2023.3.15.
