Even through Ocean Child’s grand, energetic alt-rock performance, Chicago-based frontman Marco Landaverde is the very same obsessive, awkward, and prolific songwriter/producer he was when he created Ocean Child in high school, 2019. Self-releasing his songs on the internet marked the first glimpse of Landaverde’s growing artistic obsession, eventually forming a full band with his friends from school. In 2020, Ocean Child found its sonic identity with the release of You.; soulful and raspy vocals, surf-esque indie rock hooks, and hazy production would become essential to Ocean Child’s sound. Landaverde further built Ocean Child as a dreamy indie-pop outfit with the release of the jaunty, summery anthem Maye the following year. In 2022, Ocean Child established their presence as a live rock band; the group became versatile and confident performers, and Landaverde reinvented himself into a high-energy, eccentric frontman. The band opened for touring act SALES at the University of Illinois’ Foellinger concert hall and played a pre-show for Irish rock band Inhaler at House of Blues Chicago. Ocean Child played with touring indie-punk trio VIAL later that year. 2023’s Benton Steps marked Ocean Child’s shift from solitary bedroom production to studio artist, ambitious to blend musical styles of new wave, indie, and alternative rock. To date, Ocean Child’s music catalogue has amassed over 250,000 music streams, and over 10,000 fans across social media and streaming platforms.
