@commonjackmusic Folk singer John Gardner started Common Jack while he was on a world tour with an actor-musician Broadway show called Once. Based on the indie film of the same name starring Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová, Gardner played 7 instruments on stage to sold-out audiences across America, Canada, and Japan for 2.5 years. After the tour finished its run, he began recording the piles of songs he amassed while on the road. Some of those songs - Viñales and Canyons in the Dark - found their way into the hands of some people who wanted to help him keep making songs. Now comes CJ’s new single, Fresh, a meditative folk track that weaves evocative storytelling with a lush, hook-laced arrangement. The track explores loving someone or yourself in a way that embraces the weird, ugly, or uncool parts. It’s about letting go of an unattainable idea of perfection because the messy bits are what make life worth living. The track is the final single off of a new EP, Lake Song, which is due out in the fall of 2020. For Gardner, who grew up on a lake in southwestern Virginia, bodies of water hold a nearly religious power and he uses that fascination to explore the wells from which we draw our spiritual, mental, and emotional strength to not only survive moments of crisis but to come out with a more grounded sense of self.
