Moulded by their Edinburgh surroundings, swim school absorb influence from a wide range of genres; from 90’s grunge to modern indie and dream-pop. Their 2021 critically acclaimed debut EP, ‘making sense of it all’ saw vocalist & guitarist Alice Johnson enter the same space occupied by the likes of Ellie Rowsell (Wolf Alice) and Juliette Jackson (The Big Moon) and tackle delicate subjects with a vibrant yet evocative presence. Recently signed to tastemaker LAB Records the band they recorded their next EP ‘Duality’ (released in May 2023) with producer Iain Berryman (Wolf Alice, Arcade Fire, Beabadoobee, Kings Of Leon, Hozier). The first single from that EP was the haunting yet gripping ‘Kill You’ and follow up ‘Delirious’ has taken the band to a new level. Not only was ‘Delirious’ Nels Hyltons Future Alternative pick on Radio 1 it all saw the band chosen as Jack Saunders Next Wave – an accolade that has helped to well and truly put the band in the spotlight. Praised by key titles including NME, CLASH, The Line of Best Fit, DORK, and Under The Radar it is live where the band truly shine. Having played 16 UK festivals in 2022 they are already lined up for TRNSMT, Kendall Calling, Stag & Dagger in 2023 and lots more yet to be announced. Add to that support slots with The Pixies, Lovejoy, Soft Cult and a sell-out Independent Venues Week tour of their own swim school are definitely ‘one to watch’ in 2023. photos by Rory Barnes
