As inauspicious introductions go, Joe Goddard’s demure tweet to Amy Douglas two years ago takes some beating: “Hi Amy,” wrote Joe. “Can we make a thing?” Like many people in 2018, Joe discovered Amy via one of the underground dance hits of the year, ‘Never Saw It Coming’ on DFA, which Crooked Man (aka DJ Parrot) had turned into a rumbling funk monster driven by Douglas’ powerful pipes. A few years down the line and that ‘thing’ has grown from a tweet to some emails, a song or two – and now an album. And what an album. Don’t be fooled by the electronic instrumentation, this is a set that marries the glorious rock’n’roll bombast of Jim Steinman with a helpful dash of Italo-disco; all held together by star-in-waiting Amy Douglas. “I sent Amy the demo of ‘Holding On Too Long’ first,” explains Joe. “Typically she sent back her parts in a few days; fully formed and sounding brilliant. It worked that way with pretty much every instrumental I sent her after that: she would respond so quickly and with such great contributions that the collaboration seemed natural and clearly fun and exciting for both of us.” Amy recalls the moment she received Joe’s demo. “I literally got the track, my husband was sit-ting next to me, and I stood up as if possessed, put my laptop down and said, ‘I have to go now. I'll be back later. I'll just be back later, but I know what I have to do.’”
