Since the turn of the millennium, Sunspot Jonz has been the foremost alias of Corey Johnson, a linchpin of independent West Coast rap. The hardheaded rapper and producer has been behind Mystik Journeymen and Living Legends, and his discography outside the groups is lengthy, ranging from the beat tape Beatdie Delites (1999) through the A Plus collaboration Stoney Hawk (2019). The Oakland native, whose assortment of pseudonyms also includes BFAP, Vision, and Dusty Black, established himself in the '90s as part of Mystik Journeymen, primarily a duo with long-term collaborator Luckyjam. He and Luckyjam also became founding members of the collective Living Legends, like Mystik Journeymen a self-supported enterprise with numerous independent studio releases. Sunspot Jonz's solo output began in earnest in 1999 -- the year Living Legends moved their home field to Los Angeles -- with Beatdie Delites, the first volume in a series of beat tapes. (It and the follow-up were actually released on cassette.) Concurrent with the growth of Living Legends, Sunspot put together a slew of proper solo albums throughout the 2000s, beginning at the start of the decade with Underground Legend and concluding in 2009 with the discs Fight-Destroy-Rock and The Darkside ov Heaven. Living Legends weren't as active in the 2010s, but Sunspot continued early in the decade with Galaxy of Dreams and Galaxy of Dreams, Vol. 2, issued respectively in 2010 and 2011. After some intermediary projects, he returned in 2019 with Stoney Hawk, made with Souls of Mischief's A Plus. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
