Filip Johnson aka Jelly Crystal is an omnivorous music-maker: his early songs took on art-rock with the swagger of an old Hollywood moviestar, and since then he’s expanded his range to funk, soul and R’n’B, all coming together under his alt-pop umbrella. His music dances through different genres like they’re his own personal playground, and he loads each song with so much personality that no matter what toys he’s playing with, it still sounds, undoubtedly, like him. Every release is something new, a funhouse filled with fantasy, a mirror held up to Johnson’s own imagination. And since he started Jelly Crystal, debuting with a self-titled EP back in 2017, he’s done it all his own way. His sound has always been that of a consummate performer, shapeshifting into new forms to meet the challenges he sets himself. Every new song is an adventure, his impulses taking twists and turns it's impossible to predict. Running through it all is his spectacular voice, swerving from a deep baritone, warm like a hand on your shoulder, to a feather-thin falsetto, effortlessly switching styles, but always captivating. All that improvisation, curiosity and theatricality comes together in Jelly Crystal. He’s already established himself in Sweden as one of the country’s hidden treasures, an artist with a unique identity that defies comparison and compartmentalisation.
