Growing up on artists such as The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and XxxTentacion, James had a substantial dependency on music as he struggled to fit in anywhere. James would spend a large portion of his formative years alone, living without a steady home. He began expressing his thoughts and feelings by writing lyrics. Lyrics that were real, raw, and honest. Years later, while struggling to stay afloat, James taught himself to rap, sing and song write. Alongside close friend Kieran Fergusson, a mix engineer and producer, the two released a series of singles and a subsequent album titled Nowhere Boy, a tribute to James' creative and personal journey. The release was followed by a tour spanning Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. COLU amassed over 70,000 streams in 2019 and thousands of loyal fans, almost entirely through social media. After spending 2019 based in Melbourne, working to improve his craft, James has returned to Brisbane to begin a new wave of releases. COLU features Fergusson on production working alongside another close friend, Jonathan Daru. The two producers combine elements of trap and electronic RnB, while James employs a variety of different melodic flows and vocal tones. From a deep and aggressive Pop Smoke-inspired chest voice to a high falsetto reminiscent of The Weeknd, James prides himself on his vocal versatility. With a unique combination of these many styles, alongside raw and highly potent lyrics, COLU aims to gain even more momentum in 2020.
