The day we brought him home, he was just a little pup Barely six weeks old, he chewed the place up When he wasn't running circles, and trippin on his feet He was over in the corner, layin' fast asleep And he dreamed of chasing rabbits or so the old folks say Little did he know all the fun we'd have one day When he was two years old, he was coming in his own He was learning how to hunt and man how he'd grown He had a ways to go, but there was fire in eyes He had enough heart for a dog twice his size And he'd dreamed of circling mallards and I'd call his name Little did he know he was well on his way Oh by the time he turned five he was really in his prime We spent each winter day together in the blind Oh the birds that dog retrieved, I pretty soon lost track He'd hit that icy water and never once look back He dreamed of honkers falling, in the blind where he stayed Little did he know we were living our best days Now he's ten years old and the years ain't been kind He wants to hunt like we used to do, but the strength is hard to find There's a fire still in the eyes of that grey and kindly face But his old and faithful bones, just can not keep pace And he dreams about the good years as he fades away Little does he know all his pain will end today.
