So we figured we'd take you north for a little bit.
This is a story that comes down to us from the very far
North of Canada, um, it's an Inuit tale from the Arctic.
It talks about Sedna, who is a beautiful Inuit girl,
And one day she and her father went on a voyage in a double kayak--
Both there in the one boat,
But each with their own paddle, lending their strength.
Now in those days, the ocean was empty, there was no life,
It just had blackness swirling below,
Ice on the surface, and the sky above.
Now, living in that sky lived Storm,
And as we all know, storms are very mischievous.
Storm looked around and saw this new toy out on the waves.
Zoomed in and started to swirl the
Waves around this little boat, playing!
Thinking, 'ooh I don't know how long this'll last, but it's mine now.
' Well, Sedna and her father did not agree,
They decided to turn the boat and make for the
Safety of the far harbour, and deny Storm his prize.
Sedna had such a strong heart that she put all of her strength
Behind every stroke of the paddle and they shot through the water.
But Sedna's father was cowardly and craven.
He looked back, and he thought to himself,
'This boat would go faster if it was lighter',
And without warning he reached out and he
Grabbed his daughter and he threw her into the icy deep.
Well that could have been the end of the tale, but it wasn't.
Sedna had such a great heart,
She swam behind the boat and she
Grabbed a hold and she wouldn't let it advance.
Her father panicked,
He grabbed the paddle and started to tap her
Fingers to make them release, but she refused.
And she wouldn't have,
But finally the terrible cold turned her fingers into clear icicles,
And with one tap the ice shattered and she fell, fingerless,
Down down into the deep,
With these little shards of ice following after.
Well that could have been the end of the tale, but it wasn't.
Sedna had such a great heart that she looked around herself in the
Empty blackness, and she thought, 'if this is to be my new home,
I don't want to be alone.' And so with a force of will,
She turned each one of those fingers into
A new animal that had never existed before.
Some became whales, others walruses, seals,
All the creatures that even today
Are said to play with her in the deep.
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
From her hands they fell, children of the ocean's swell
With ice's twinkle given sight
She offered them a name and seals they all became
And laughing, took a coat of dappled light
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
From her hands they fell, ever in the sea to dwell
Nimble fingered, quick and lithe
They offered them a name and otters they became
Keepers of her secrets in the ice
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
From her hands they fell, mightiest of all
But slow and gentle as the tides
She offered them a name and whales they all became
To tread the paths the lesser are denied
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Sedna roamed the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Sedna roams the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Sedna roams the deep -- the cold forgotten deep
No one wants to be alone
Thank you, incredible.
Thank you!
