she's the fading figure just beyond the canvas she holds her head up high in shame and stretches her skin so the light can get in but he'll paint her just the same again her eyes are raindrops he's frozen still she smiles and he says he thinks he will he says "i think i'll paint you bright to liven up the saddest night" but she dreams a voice like trumpets begs and says she'd love it "if you'd only paint me blue" she says "you can paint me blue" outside the night is drunk and all the stars are stumbling but she stands so still forgetting a wish and if she drops her eyes she knows he'll pick them up in a brilliant streak of blue high above the lips he says that she's a masterpiece a freckle on the face of god and it's true so she's painted blue she's closer to perfect than me or you she says "you can paint me blue" and her eyes are floating and her soul is sinking but her lips keep striking poses so he lets her go this one girl show he understands and now she knows it she begs hang me hang me high on the greyest wall you find it's the closest thing you'll ever get to what's inside he drops to his knees declares this is art i painted her blue to match her heart
