The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem, right? That's how we fight the good fight against patriotic complacency? Then boy is Uncle Sam gonna be proud when he sees we've become first step experts Expertly professing our distress! We've figured it all out, throughout the countless shootings Political feudings, riots, and lootings Sexual uprootings, and cold-war rebooting to name a few irrefutable messes What squalor, what filth that's dribbled down the chin of grinning politicians for too long... But we have the solution! A veritable napkin, if you will, to clean the spill! We've taken to Twitter and exercised our first amendment against the second Through Facebook feeds, Tumblr tirades, million-man marches, megaphone droning Groaning, and bemoaning Owning the problem has never been so easy! "And a bunch of kids were killed in another shooting..." No, no, but we're taking steps! We'll repeal those pesky laws set down by our forefathers. It's so simple! Can't you see? "But why hasn't he been impeached yet?" "And who's gonna take his place?" No, no, no, no, ignore the current resident of the president's office The gerrymandering, pandering, missile alerts, hurtful slurs from elders We've been through this! We're on the road to recovery! Uncovering unsavory attributes that blacked out what makes America great! "What about the treatment of women Native Americans, and immigrants being trivialized?" "They've been vocalizing the issue for generations..." Okay, I realize that but we know now, okay? We know there's a problem and we're on track to fix it! It's ridiculous to believe that we can perceive such egregious misdeeds And not remedy this Listen I said the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem And I admit our problem is we have so many problems that To solve them outright is downright improbable We strip away the layers and layers of decay And replace the players with those who won't lead us astray I want this to work I need this to work The planet is dying, victims families are crying, our leaders are lying My brain is frying under the intense social pressure of trying to pick a side Don't deride me for my doubt because every day another devoutly Espousing lout shouts that the decisions I make are leading to patriotic decay So I pray to the God we say we trust on our nickels and dimes That this time the coin toss tosses this god-forsaken chaos out the window Countrymen, we've made it this far Now let's wait and see if something finally pays off
